Writing is a Funny Old Thing

  1. I have a writing room on the fourth level of a four level split bungalow in a heavily treed older neighbourhood in a small city. It's quiet here. I type out words that appear on my computer screen in tidy rows, left to right, left to right, clusters of phonemes that symbolize everything that happens in a world I invent.

It's quiet here. Here in this room. Here in my mind. Hours go by. Days. Sometimes months, before another person encounters a scrap of the story I create.

Then. Then. The words, the sentences, paragraphs and chapters emerge in a publication and take on a life of their own in the minds of others.

Then, I go back to my writing room and enter the idea factory that masquerades as my mind and begin another story.

That's how I imagine it should be. On the Reality T.V. version of my life, however, a very different sequence rolls out. with my idea factory rattling and clanking to start engines for production, I step into the spot-light of marketing and promotion.

  2. Marketing and promotion are not unpleasant pursuits. They are the show and tell part of writing. Ironically the show and tell part of the writing process comes when I am tired and bored with what has just been published.
